No doubt you have heard of using cigars for birth announcements or have even had It’s a boy cigars yourself, but it’s a little less common to actually know why people smoke them.  Well, the answer is quite simple.  Though some of it is for celebratory reasons, most of the time people smoked cigars for birth announcements out of boredom!

Today, men often have specialized birth announcement cigar bands printed up as gifts to each other when they become fathers, but this tradition of personalized cigar bands did not exist in colonial America.  The real reason why cigar smoking as a trend became associated with births, is because during these “olden” times woman did not go to the hospital but gave birth at home with their mothers or midwives as aides.  Men were banished to the barn to wait, and at this time, it was customary when visiting to offer cigar gifts to guests, so men really just smoked the cigars because they had nothing better to do!
